Huntsville Mayor featured at Washington, D.C. ‘Innovation Summit’

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle is part of a panel of heavy hitters from the world of politics, technology and energy invited to George Washington University’s “GW Moving the Planet Forward Innovation Summit.”

The summit takes place Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Battle will participate in an hour-long session titled, “Shining Cities: Sustainability Starts at Home,” along with Washington Mayor Vincent Gray and Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory.

In 2009, Battle created the “Green 13″ task force to identify ways that Huntsville can become a more environmentally-friendly place. The task force recommended dozens of ideas, including tax breaks on locally-grown produce, high-occupancy vehicle lanes and reduced building permit fees for projects that follow sustainable construction guidelines.

Summit organizers say the event is designed to help “find and elevate innovation in the areas of climate, energy and sustainability.” Other panelists include U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra and Frank Sesno, creator and host of “Planet Forward.”
